Double Chin

According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 67% of men and women said they are bothered by the fat beneath their chin, known as a "double chin."  Oftentimes, double chins will not go away with diet and exercise, and they can make you appear older or heavier than you are.

Valley of the Sun Dermatology offers two FDA-approved, in-office, non-surgical treatments for double chin: Kybella™ and CoolSculpting®.  Both products qualify for the Brilliant Distinctions reward program. Depending on the patient, more than one treatment of Kybella or CoolSculpting may be necessary.

The first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin by physically destroying fat cells

What is Kybella made of?
Kybella is a solution containing deoxycholate, a natural chemical made by your body that works in the intestine and helps break down dietary fats.

How does Kybella work?
Just as Kybella breaks down dietary fats, it can also can break down unwanted fat under the skin.  A small amount of Kybella is injected with a tiny needle into the fat under the chin.  Within a few minutes, the local fat is destroyed where the injection was done. Over the next few weeks and months, the injured fat cells are removed permanently by normal body metabolism.

What are the common side effects?
Some common side effects of Kybella are swelling and inflammation of the treated area. Patients may also experience an aching or numb feeling, which is common for a few days to weeks after the treatment.

How long will Kybella results last?
Results may very well be permanent; however long-term studies have not been completed. It is generally true that once a fat cell is destroyed, it is not replaced.

The only FDA-cleared non-surigical procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet- and exercise-resistant fat
What is CoolSculpting?
Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues.  CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.

Are there any side effects?
During the procedure, you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and/or pain. Rare side effects may also occur.

The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask us if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

Can I return to normal activities after my treatment?
Yes. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Oftentimes, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting session is over.

When will I see results?
You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment and will experience the most dramatic results after three months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.
